Prayers of Blessing – Part One

Blessing the Lord

God began creation by blessing first the fish and birds to multiple and fill the skies and seas (Gen 1:22).  Then He blessed man (Gen 1:28).  At the end of creation, God blessed the seventh day Sabbath (Gen 2:3).  In coming blogs we will look at prayers of blessing in several arenas – how we bless the Lord (Psalm 103:1,2), how we bless our children (Gen 48:20), how to bless our homes (1 Chr 16:43 ) and how to enter Sabbath blessing (Gen 2:3).

What does it mean to bless the Lord?  We start by recognizing He is the source of all blessing and as we receive all He has given, our part is to return it in blessing back to Him.  The first mention of “bless the Lord” is found in Deuteronomy 8:10 “When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.”

It is interesting that the Hebrew word for “bless” is comprised of three letters whose meaning denotes a Read more »

Commission Prayer

Commission prayer

Recently I was meditating on Isaiah 61:1-3.  While this is speaking of Jesus and fulfilled in Him (Luke 4:18, 19), it also is His promise and commission for us as His disciples (Mark 16:15-18).  I pondered what would happen if every Christian prayed this prayer and walked it out every day?  It would turn the world upside down! (Acts 17:6)

Try it today!

The Spirit of the Lord is upon mepause and reflect, feel the Spirit of God on you and in you.

Because the Lord has anointed mefeel His anointing, let it wash over you.  Don’t be in a hurry! Read more »

Stoplight Prayers

Stoplight prayers

Have one of those days when all the stoplights are red?  It can be frustrating, particularly when we are in a hurry.  Try this breath prayer “My times are in Your hands.”  As you breathe in say verbally or silently “My times” as you picture yourself taking all your plans and schedules for the day – breathe out as you say “are in Your hands” picturing yourself placing all into Jesus’ hands trusting His time, not yours.  Do this Read more »

Prayers of Adoration

Adoring Him

Another favorite for me are prayers of adoration.  No asking, just lifting up and proclaiming the glory of who God is.  It is amazing when in the midst of challenging circumstances, a few minutes of just adoring the Lord, what a difference it makes in our attitude and heart!  Can’t sleep?  Begin with the letter “A” and adore God for who He is with characteristics beginning with A (Abundant, Available, Awesome, etc.), most times you will be “zzzz” before you get to the letter Z.  Have kids?  Use this as Read more »

Breath prayers

breath prayers

Quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to pray, breath prayers are simple phrases offered up in the rhythm of breathing.  The Jesus Prayer is one example (See blog), but many others can be used, usually based on Scripture.  It is a great way to stay connected to God throughout the day as you go about work, caring for children, or as you go to sleep at night.  The deep breathing has great health benefits as well!  Try these:

Anxious?  Worried?  Say silently “The Lord is my Shepherd” as you breathe in picturing Jesus’ tender care over you.  Then as you breathe out, “I shall not want” (or “I have all I need”) as you release all your cares on Him.  Repeat over and over until you feel fully at peace. Read more »

Want to get your kids involved in prayer in a fun way?  Try this version of the children’s game “Pin the tail on the donkey”.  Blindfold one child in front of a large world map.  Spin them around and then have them pick a place on the map (if they hit water, have them try again).  Remove blindfold so Read more »

The Jesus Prayer and the Unnamed Pilgrim

Jesus Prayer

You think your life is tough?  A Russian pilgrim, in the mid-19th century was orphaned at age 2, injured by his brother in childhood causing a permanent handicap.  This same brother later stole all his money and set his house on fire. Barely escaping with their lives, he and his wife lived homeless and in poverty for two years until his wife died.  He had every reason to be bitter and resentful, but chose instead to seek the Lord.  Traveling from place to place, the burning desire of this pilgrim was how to Read more »

Movie Prayers

A person in a theatre
One evening my husband and I went to the movies on a whim. We hadn’t researched the movies available and so just picked one that sounded interesting. It was one of those movies we should have walked out of but kept hoping for some point of redemption in the plot to make it worth it. At the end as the credits began to roll, I cried out to the Lord, “What a waste of time and money. Why are we here?” I felt directed to the names moving across the screen and a prompting to begin praying for them, realizing this was God’s redemptive plan. I wondered if anyone ever prayed for
